J. Muyale Inzai
Indefatigable
choral conductor, clinician, composer, prolific arranger and budding
musicologist, J. Muyale is founding director of the
Boys Choir of Kenya. For
years Aquinas High School has relied on his seamless energies and expertise to
shape the artistic vision of the choral program of the school. Muyale is largely
self-taught as a musician and generously credits composer and sage David Zalo
for his love of music and choral management. He eventually found rewarding
opportunities performing with Boniface Mganga and the internationally acclaimed
Muungano National Choir of Nairobi. His adult choral group,
Hamjambo Afrika Choir, has consistently won
their division in the annual Kenya Music & Cultural Festival. His Aquinas High
School Choir is also a hit at the youth version of the Festival, and performed
at the Winners Concert this summer! Evidently one of the most performed of all
Kenyan contemporary composers, Muyale is unusually introspect and humble about
his accomplishments, one of the many qualities that endeared him to the St.
Louis African Chorus. He was an immediate hit with participants in the
Fall 2003 African
Choral Music Workshops across the United States and Canada, and is returning
by popular demand to the Fall 2004 event.
