WAR DANCE

The armies perched on
either side of the Plain

Spears drawn, their tips refracted
The gentle rays of the even sun

The siege’s lasted a whole day Taken days to summon the villages

Intricate dance steps rehearsed along the way
The best dancers led

Colorful costumes retouched
Some rethreaded to fit the mode

New songs swelled repertoires
Instruments tuned, retuned

Body artists were engaged
Camwood, other dyes
Borne on calabashes

Amulets and charms decorated arms, wrists, waists, and ankles
Even the headdresses

It was the way of the elders
To dance in turn on the Plain
Until one side’s bereft
Of new steps

The battle’s won
The foes call a truce,
And they drank, feasted,
and danced some more…
